The Windridge Therapeutic Equestrian Center, located near the city of Gilmer in East Texas, sprawls over 66 acres of pine-covered landscape, where nine staff members, 22 horses, and a 38,000-square-foot equestrian facility are dedicated to providing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities through equine-assisted activities and therapies.
Established in 1988, the organization has grown over time and experienced some growing pains, like all small businesses. Margo Dewkett, founder of Windridge, identified the large and growing volume of paper that was undermining operational efficiency as a key area where Windridge needed to improve.
“We’ve used paper documents for all of our activities, from employee and client forms to reports on the conditions of our horses to research that we’re conducting on the effects of equine-assisted therapy,” she said. “We’ve been operating for more than 25 years and wanted to create electronic versions of all of our documents. But when I looked at all the paper we had accumulated, I despaired to think how much work it would take to create.”
Once we heard their story about how Windridge is conquering paper and how their use of ScanSnap scanners has impacted their ability to focus on their mission of helping people rather than the business’ organizational efficiency, we thought it would be a good story to share with our audience of small business owners.
